Innovative Air Intake Design Boosts Performance and Sound for Upcoming Honda CB1000 Hornet

Honda's CB1000 Hornet, previewed last year, remains shrouded in mystery with technical specifications and pricing still under wraps. Scheduled for release in late 2024, the new Hornet is expected to exceed 148hp and 74lb.ft of torque, boasting an engine derived from the 2017 CBR1000RR Fireblade. This power upgrade promises to outshine the existing CB1000R while maintaining affordability by forgoing luxuries like the single-sided swingarm and adopting a contemporary style over the CB1000R's 'neo-retro' aesthetic.

Ingenious Air Intake Solution

To enhance performance and reduce costs, Honda has implemented straightforward yet effective engineering solutions. A standout feature is the innovative air intake design, detailed in a recent patent. Traditional ram-air intakes, common in superbikes, face challenges in naked bikes due to their impact on styling. Honda's clever approach places the intakes behind the upper parts of the forks, on either side of the steering stem, channeling air through the gap between the upper and lower chassis rails directly into the airbox.

Overcoming Airflow Challenges

The small headlight cowl and forward-jutting panels on each side of the fuel tank work in tandem to direct airflow smoothly towards the intakes. However, this setup isn't without its challenges. Turbulence can occur as air is routed around the forks, and the direct path into the airbox makes it susceptible to rain and spray, potentially soaking the air filter.

Honda's patent addresses these issues by adding three louvres across the intakes. These louvres straighten the turbulent airflow and deflect rainwater away, solving both problems without adding significant cost or complexity.

Enhanced Rider Experience

An added benefit of this design is the positioning of the intake openings just below the top yoke, which allows the rider to hear the engine's intake sound clearly. This enhancement provides a more engaging riding experience while maintaining overall noise levels. Yamaha has employed a similar concept in the MT-09, though with a more complex system of chambers between the airbox and tank top, which also manages rain routing.

Conclusion

Honda's CB1000 Hornet, with its innovative air intake design, promises both enhanced performance and an improved auditory experience for riders. As we await further details on specifications and pricing, this new model is shaping up to be a compelling option in the motorcycle market, balancing power, affordability, and modern design.
