Step-by-Step Guide: Installing Motorcycle Grips for a Secure and Durable Fit

Installing motorcycle grips can be simple if you utilize the proper technique and materials. Here's my take on the best technique to assure a secure, durable installation.

What You Will Need

  • Grip glue is desirable, but alternate options include hairspray, rubbing alcohol, or soapy water.
  • Utility knife (for removing old grips).
  • Rag and cleaner (to prepare the handlebars).
  • Compressed air (optional but useful during removal or installation).

Step-by-step process

Step 1. Remove the old grips

  1. Using a utility knife, carefully cut the old grips lengthwise.
  2. Peel them off.
  3. Rub the handlebar and throttle tube thoroughly with rubbing alcohol or brake cleaner to remove any old adhesive or residue.

Step 2. Select your adhesive

  • Grip Glue: Ideal for a long-lasting, firm hold.
  • Hairspray: Acts as both a lubricant and an adhesive when it dries.
  • Rubbing Alcohol: Quick drying and forms a good bond.
  • Brake Cleaner: Great for evaporating fast and leaving a clean surface.
  • Compressed Air (no glue): If your grips are tight, use compressed air to ease them on without glue.

Step 3. Install the grips

  1. Apply your preferred glue evenly inside the grip and on the handlebar/throttle tube.
  2. Quickly slide the grip onto the handlebar in one fluid motion. Overtwisting might cause the adhesive to spread unevenly.
  3. Align the grip (if it has marks or patterns) before the adhesive cures.

Step 4. Allow to dry

Allow the adhesive to completely set before riding. This can take anywhere from a few hours to an entire night, depending on the material used.

Pro Tips

My preferred method

In most circumstances, I recommend grip glue or rubbing alcohol. They provide a secure grasp with no problems.
If you need a quick and clean alternative, compressed air is an excellent choice for snug gripping.
