How the rim lock works on your dirt bike

"Fairly high speed about 65mph, I had the rear tire on my 650 BSA suddenly go flat. It had picked up a nail and as soon as it lost some pressure it spun inside the rim and torn the valve stem out. The rear end went to the left and then snapped back the right and dumped on the pavement."

It's a good reason to have rim locks on your wire wheels.

How to install a motorcycle USB charger or any other electronic devices

More and more electrical devices are made available for motorcycles, such as USB charger, DVR, GPS, radar detector, heated grips & seats, and auxiliary lights, etc.

It is easy to add only one device. Connect the positive wire to a 12V positive wire from the ignition switch, lighting circuit, etc. then connect the negative wire to a ground connection, and find an appropriate mounting point for the device. Bang, jobs all done.

However, it's a total different story when you install more than 2 devices. It might turn out to be a disaster to add unknown loads to the whole current supply of the motorcycle with the way mentioned above.

How to photograph a motorcycle? (Part II)

Tip 3: Creative compositions

<3/4 beauty shot>

Shoot the front three-quarters of the bike from the right-hand side (kickstand away from you) to add depth to the image.

The quintessential 3/4 beauty shot. All vehicles are flattered by this angle. Thumb through most motorcycle magazines and you’ll notice there is hardly a single bike in straight profile.

No matter where you’re shooting, one key to decent motorcycle photography is making sure you position the bike at a 3/4 angle from the camera. Thumb through the magazine and you’ll notice we hardly ever shoot a single bike in straight profile. The 3/4 angle achieves many things, including elimination of hot spots (bright flares of sunlight) on the chrome and reflections of the photographer. A 3/4 angle is flattering to motorcycles and condenses them into a more solid, aggressive posture by eliminating see-through space, without losing any detail. You can also crop more closely at this angle so the bike or bike and rider better fill the frame. Shot from either the rear or the front, a bike at a 3/4 angle is going to look more attractive than it does in profile.

The center of an image is a stable, straightforward place. When you put something there visually, it stays there visually, usually resulting in a static composition.

<Symmetrical shot>

Depending upon the scene – symmetry can be something to go for – or to avoid completely.
A symmetrical shot with strong composition and a good point of interest can lead to a striking image – but without the strong point of interest it can be a little predictable.

What does IP67 mean?

IP67 is two numbers, one that refers to the dust resistance rating and one that refers to water resistance.
IP6x is the highest dust resistance rating, so this product is fully protected against dust.
IPx7, the water resistance rating, means this product can withstand immersion in water up to one meter (3.3 feet) for 30 minutes, tested in laboratory conditions.
IPx7 is the second-highest rating, below IPx8, which indicates an ability to withstand long periods of submersion under pressure.

First digit: Solid particle protection

The first number in the rating code represents the degree of protection provided against the entry of foreign solid objects, such as fingers or dust. These protection levels range from 0 to 6.

Code Effective against Description
0 - No protection against contact and ingress of objects
1 >50 mm Any large surface of the body, such as the back of a hand, but no protection against deliberate contact with a body part
2 >12.5 mm Fingers or similar objects
3 >2.5 mm Tools, thick wires, etc.
4 >1 mm Most wires, slender screws, large ants etc.
5 Dust protected Ingress of dust is not entirely prevented, but it must not enter in sufficient quantity to interfere with the satisfactory operation of the equipment.
6 Dust tight No ingress of dust; complete protection against contact (dust tight). A vacuum must be applied. Test duration of up to 8 hours based on air flow.

Second digit: Liquid ingress protection

The second number represents the degree of protection against the entry of moisture, with protection levels ranging from 0 through 8.

Code Protection against Test duration Description
0 - - No protection
1 Dripping water 10 mins Protection against vertically dripping water
2 Dripping water when tilted at 15° 10 mins Protection against vertically dripping water when device is tilted at an angle up to 15 degrees
3 Spraying water 5 mins Protection against direct sprays of water when device is tilted at an angle up to 60 degrees
4 Splashing of water 5 mins Protection from sprays and splashing of water in all directions.
5 Water jets 3 mins from a distance of 3 meters Protection from low-pressure water projected from a nozzle with a 6.3mm diameter opening in any direction
6 Powerful water jets 3 mins from a distance of 3 meters Protection from water projected in powerful jets from a nozzle with a 12.5mm diameter opening in any direction
7 Immersion, up to 1 m depth 30 mins Protected from immersion in water with a depth of up to 1 meter (or 3.3 feet) for up to 30 mins
8 Immersion, 1 m or more depth Varies Protected from immersion in water with a depth of more than 1 meter (manufacturer must specify exact depth)
